The Self-Compassion Break

Three sentences that interrupt the inner critic mid-attack. A research-backed practice you can run in under a minute.

The Self-Compassion Break

Most of us speak to ourselves in a tone we would never use on a friend. Psychologist Kristin Neff, who pioneered the research on self-compassion, found that the harsh inner voice does not actually improve performance; it mostly adds shame to whatever was already hard. Her research links self-compassion to more resilience, more motivation to improve, and less anxiety, not less accountability.

Neff describes three components that make up self-compassion: mindfulness (noticing you are struggling, without drowning in it), common humanity (remembering that struggle is part of being human, not proof you are uniquely broken), and self-kindness (offering yourself the tone you would offer a friend). Her self-compassion break turns those three into three sentences you can say anywhere.

Name the moment

~45 sec

Bring to mind the thing that is hard right now and say, silently or aloud: 'This is a moment of struggle.' Just naming it creates a sliver of space between you and it.

If the kind sentence felt awkward or fake, that is normal and says nothing except that the muscle is new. Neff's finding worth keeping in your pocket: self-compassion is not letting yourself off the hook. People who practice it take more responsibility for mistakes, not less, because owning them no longer requires surviving an internal beating first.
