The Science of Awe

There is an emotion you have felt under a truly dark, star-loaded sky, at the base of something enormous, in the final minutes of a great piece of music, or watching a video of Earth from orbit. Psychologist Dacher Keltner, who has spent over two decades studying it, defines awe as the feeling of encountering something vast that exceeds your current understanding of the world. For most of scientific history nobody studied it at all; it seemed too rare and too fuzzy. Keltner's work showed it is neither.

Two findings matter for your everyday life. First, awe produces what researchers call the small self: in its presence, self-focus drops, the endless first-person narration quiets, and in study after study people report their worries feeling physically smaller against the larger backdrop. For a mind prone to rumination, awe works like a zoom-out button that argument and logic cannot press. Second, and this is the practical miracle: awe does not require the Grand Canyon. In a study of older adults asked to take weekly awe walks (ordinary walks taken with deliberate attention to vastness and novelty), participants reported growing daily awe, more joy, and less distress over just eight weeks, compared to walkers given no such instruction. Same legs, same neighborhood, different attention.

Awe, it turns out, is less about where you are and more about how wide you are willing to look.

Keltner's lab has also traced what awe does in the body: goosebumps and the chills are its signature, and awe experiences are associated with calmer cardiovascular activity and a quieting of the brain's default mode network, the same self-referential circuitry that lights up during rumination. In plain terms, the machinery that narrates you is briefly given something bigger than you to process, and it goes quiet. People consistently underrate how available this is: a recording of a great choir, time-lapse footage of a storm front, or ten minutes with a book about deep time can produce measurable awe on a weekday lunch break, no canyon involved.

Whatever you just picked is your reliable supply line; Keltner's surveys find human goodness is actually the most common source worldwide, which surprises people who assume awe lives only in landscapes. Stock your week accordingly: one awe walk, one piece of music given your full attention, one documentary that makes the universe feel large.

The dose matters less than the regularity. Rumination is a zoom lens stuck on maximum; awe is the habit of zooming out, and like all habits it strengthens with repetition. Your problems will still be there after the walk. They will just be the right size.

For a crowded week, awe stacks well with things you already do: take the long way past the biggest trees, put the phone away for one full sunset, or queue the piece of music that reliably gives you chills and listen to it without doing anything else. Keltner's point, repeated across two decades of studies, is that awe is not a luxury emotion reserved for vacations; it is basic mental equipment, and it runs on attention, which you carry everywhere.
