I don't know if I'm burning out
Tired, cynical, doubting your own work - burnout is a pattern with three markers. How to check honestly and what actually changes it.
You're tired, but lots of people are tired. You can't tell if this is a rough patch or something with a name. The honest frame: burnout isn't a feeling, it's a pattern - months of output exceeding recovery - and it has three markers you can actually check.
What your mind is doing: running the three markers - exhaustion that rest doesn't fix, cynicism ('what's the point, nothing changes here'), and slipping belief in your own work. Tasks that took an hour now take three, and you read that as proof about you.
What your body is doing: flat mornings, more colds than usual, sleep that doesn't refresh, shoulders that never quite come down.
Why this happens: burnout is a workload-recovery gap held too long, not a weakness. Nobody burns out from caring too little - it happens to people who kept going anyway.
Check-in
Across the last month, not just today: how close to empty have you been running?

Score the three markers
Give yourself 0 to 10 on each, right now: exhaustion rest doesn't fix, cynicism about the work, belief in your own output. Two or more running high for a month or longer is the burnout pattern, not a bad week.
Quick quiz
What most reliably separates burnout from a stressful stretch?
Check-in
If a colleague described your last month as their own, what would you tell them to change first?
Longer term: recovery from real burnout is structural - the load or the recovery has to actually change. That can mean renegotiating scope with your manager, taking the leave sitting in your balance, or moving the most draining piece off your plate.
A therapist would tell you: the cynicism isn't your personality souring, it's the mind's insulation against effort that stopped mattering. The fix is conditions, not attitude.
Common mistakes: pushing harder to earn rest later; taking a holiday and returning to an identical setup; and hiding it while your output quietly makes the announcement for you.
When to seek more support: if all three markers have been with you a month or more, if sleep or appetite are off, or if the flatness follows you home and into weekends - talk to a professional now, because untreated burnout drifts toward depression. If hopelessness has already entered, reach out today, not in two weeks.
