Repair Attempts: The Skill Happy Couples Share

Stable couples do not argue less. They repair better. Build your own repair kit in four minutes.

Repair Attempts: The Skill Happy Couples Share

After watching thousands of couples argue in his research lab, psychologist John Gottman reached a conclusion that surprises most people: happy couples do not fight less than unhappy ones. What sets them apart is what happens mid-fight, in the small moments he calls repair attempts: a joke, a touch, a 'wait, let me try that again', anything that releases the tension before it escalates.

In Gottman's research, whether repair attempts succeeded predicted relationship stability remarkably well. Couples whose repairs land can argue plenty and stay solid; couples whose repairs get ignored or rebuffed drift toward trouble even with fewer fights.

The catch: repair attempts are easy to miss when you are angry. That is why couples who do this well tend to build their repairs in advance, together, while things are calm.

Pick 3 phrases that work for you two

Together, choose three repair phrases that feel natural: 'Can we rewind?', 'I am on your side', 'That came out wrong.' Borrowed phrases work only if they sound like you.

Quick quiz

According to Gottman's research, which is the stronger warning sign for a relationship?

Which repair style fits you two best?

One warning: a repair attempt only counts if it is received. If you notice your partner reaching for one mid-argument, take it, even if you are still cross. Accepting an imperfect repair beats winning the point, every time.
