Perfectionism: Done Is a Skill

Perfectionism is not high standards; it is armor. Learn what it protects you from, then practice shipping at good-enough.

Perfectionism: Done Is a Skill

Perfectionism wears a flattering disguise: it looks like high standards, conscientiousness, caring about the work. Researcher Brene Brown, after years of studying shame and vulnerability, offers a less flattering and more accurate picture: perfectionism is not striving for excellence, it is a shield. At its core sits a belief that if I look perfect and do it perfectly, I can avoid judgment, blame, and shame.

That distinction matters at work, because the shield is expensive. Perfectionism delays shipping, inflates small tasks into ordeals, and keeps you polishing slide seven while the deadline burns. Worst of all, it never actually delivers the protection: the judgment you fear is imagined, so no amount of polish can silence it.

The way out is not lowering your standards. It is separating the work's real requirements from the armor's demands, in writing, before the armor gets a vote.

Define good-enough before starting

Before you touch the task, write one sentence: 'This is done when...' with concrete criteria. Definitions written mid-task are hostage negotiations with your inner critic.

According to Brown's research, what is perfectionism mainly protecting you from?

Done is a skill, and like any skill it feels wrong before it feels natural. Start with a low-stakes task this week: define done, timebox it, ship it, log it. The work will be good. It always was; that was never the real question.
