Your body clock resets on morning light, and indoor light is far dimmer than it looks. A first-hour routine to anchor your sleep.
Somewhere behind your eyes sits a clock the size of a grain of rice: the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the body's master timekeeper. It decides when melatonin rises, when body temperature dips, when alertness peaks, and it has one design quirk that matters enormously: it runs slightly long. Left alone, most human clocks drift a little later each day. Something has to set them back on time every morning, and that something is light.
Harvard's Charles Czeisler and the circadian research tradition he helped build spent decades mapping exactly how light does this: the timing, the brightness, the wavelengths. The practical summary is short. Bright light early in your day anchors the clock, so melatonin starts on schedule that night and sleep comes easier. The same light late in the evening does the opposite, shoving the whole schedule later. Light is not a mood accessory; it is the clock's primary input signal.
Modern life gets the signal exactly backwards: dim mornings indoors, bright screens at night. And most of us badly misjudge the dimness, because our eyes adapt so smoothly that a pleasant kitchen and an overcast street feel similar. They are not remotely similar, and that difference is the whole trick.
