I'm emotionally numb.

Feeling nothing when you used to feel everything is confusing and quietly scary; here is a gentle way to start reconnecting.

I'm emotionally numb.

What's probably happening

Things that used to move you now land on nothing. Good news, sad news, music, people: it all feels muffled, like life behind glass. You may function fine on the outside while feeling absent on the inside.

What your mind is doing

Numbness is usually protection, not emptiness. When feelings have been too heavy for too long, the mind turns the volume down on all of them. It cannot mute only the painful ones; joy goes quiet too.

What your body is doing

It may feel heavy, slow, or strangely far away. Some people describe watching themselves from a distance. This is the body's low-power mode, and it is a signal worth respecting.

Why this happens

Long stress, loss, or overwhelm can push the nervous system past fight-or-flight into shutdown. It is a normal response to too much, not a broken personality. And it can soften, gently, with the right kind of care.

The next 2 minutes: a gentle sensory reconnect

Step 1 of 4

Hold something with texture

~30 sec

A warm mug, a cold glass, a rough sleeve. Just notice the temperature and texture in your hands. No need to feel anything more.

What helps today

Lower the bar. Do not chase big feelings; collect small sensations, a few times a day. Warm water on your hands, sun on your face, a song you once loved played quietly. Contact with people helps even when it feels flat; let someone sit with you without a task.

What helps long-term

Gentle routine rebuilds the ground: regular sleep, meals, daylight, and a little movement. Reduce the numbing extras like endless scrolling or drinking, which deepen the fog. And be honest with someone you trust about how absent you feel; numbness shrinks a little every time it is spoken.

Check-in

When did you last feel really present, and what were you doing?

Therapist tip

Numbness is not the absence of feeling; it is feeling wrapped in protection. The way back is warmth and patience, not force. Nobody ever criticized themselves into feeling alive again.

Common mistakes

  • Forcing big emotions with sad films or intense news to feel something; it usually deepens the shutdown.
  • Calling yourself lazy or cold; numbness is a state, not a character.
  • Waiting alone for it to pass while pulling away from everyone.

When to seek more support

Please take this one seriously: numbness that lasts more than a couple of weeks, or that came after something painful, deserves professional support, plainly and without shame. It is treatable, and you do not have to find the way back alone: talk to your therapist, or start with Milo in the app.
