Homesick at University

Missing home is not a sign you made the wrong choice. A five-minute practice for building a portable anchor wherever you are.

Homesick at University

Homesickness has a way of arriving at the worst moments: a Sunday evening in a quiet dorm, the smell of someone else's cooking, a photo on your feed. If that is you right now, nothing is wrong with you. Missing home is your attachment system doing exactly what it was built to do, and it hits most students at some point in their first year.

It also does not mean you made the wrong choice. Homesickness measures how much you love what you left, not how badly you fit where you are. The two facts can be true at once: you can ache for home and still be building a good life here.

What helps is not pretending home does not exist, and not living on video calls either. It is carrying a small piece of home with you while planting something new.

Pick a home ritual

~1 min

Choose one small ritual from home: the tea your family drinks at night, a Sunday breakfast, a song that played in the kitchen. Small and repeatable beats grand.

When the ache is loud right now and you need to settle before you can do any of that, a short guided breathing practice helps. This one is from the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center and is freely available to everyone.

Check-in

What is one thing from home you could recreate this week?

Most homesickness softens over weeks as the new place accumulates its own rituals. If yours is deepening instead, or it is keeping you from classes and people, that is worth a conversation with a counselor or your therapist. You do not have to wait it out alone.
