Burnout Is a System Signal

Burnout is not a personal weakness to push through. Learn its three faces and the recovery levers you actually control.

Burnout Is a System Signal

Check-in

Which of these shows up most for you lately?

The researcher who mapped burnout, psychologist Christina Maslach, found it is not one feeling but three dimensions that travel together: emotional exhaustion, cynicism or detachment from the work, and a sinking sense of ineffectiveness. Her Maslach Burnout Inventory remains the standard way researchers measure it.

Her most important finding is the one workplaces like least: burnout is primarily a mismatch between a person and their working conditions, not a defect in the person. Chronic overload, little control, thin recognition, and values conflicts predict burnout far better than any personality trait does.

That reframe matters because it changes the fix. You cannot deep-breathe your way out of a structurally impossible job. But you are also not powerless: some levers sit on your side of the desk.

Audit your energy leaks

For three days, jot down which tasks drain you fastest and which give anything back. Burnout hides in the specifics; the list makes it visible.

Quick quiz

Can burnout be fixed by personal resilience alone?

If exhaustion, dread, or numbness have been your baseline for months, please treat that as real. Bring it to your therapist or doctor. Burnout overlaps with depression, and untangling the two is exactly what professionals are for.
