A Stoic Reset for a Hard Day

A two-thousand-year-old note-to-self from a Roman emperor, and a practical audit for sorting what is yours to carry today.

A Stoic Reset for a Hard Day

Marcus Aurelius ran the Roman Empire through plague, war, and betrayal, and at night he wrote notes to himself that were never meant for us to read. In Book IV of his Meditations (public domain, in George Long's translation) he writes: 'Do not act as if thou wert going to live ten thousand years. Death hangs over thee. While thou livest, while it is in thy power, be good.'

The old phrasing can sound grim, but read gently it is the opposite of grim: stop postponing your real life and your real values until some calmer week that never comes. Today, with its annoyances and its unfinished list, is the only material you actually have.

The Stoics paired this urgency with their most practical tool, the dichotomy of control, laid out by the philosopher Epictetus: some things are up to you (your choices, your effort, your responses) and some are not (other people, outcomes, the past). Misery, they argued, mostly comes from gripping the second list. On a hard day, the sorting itself is the relief.

The control audit

Step 1 of 4

Write the situation down

~2 min

Take the thing weighing on you and write it out in two or three plain sentences. On paper it is a situation; in your head it is weather.

Check-in

What is the one thing you are releasing today?

Marcus wrote his notes at night, over and over, because the sorting never stays done; that is why he needed reminding too. One audit will not make you a Stoic, but on a hard day it does something better: it hands you back the one list you can actually do something about.
